"... music therapy has brought a quality of joy into my child's life"

MUSIC CLUB

What is the Music Club?
These are fun sessions for all children, regardless of their abilities, which involve the creative exploration of sound and movement. Using torches, lights, silhouettes, percussion instruments and the piano, children are given an opportunity to experience different ways to explore their imagination in a musical context (sessions are accompanied by music and multi-sensory equipment).

Edison Carolino
For over thirteen years Edison has been working as a music teacher and music therapist developing new ways to explore creativity through the playing of musical instruments. He graduated in music therapy from London Guildhall School of Music and Drama and currently works with children and adults for the Otakar Kraus Music Trust.

Suitable ages for this Workshop
The workshop is available to all children between the ages 2 to 6 years old and to those between the ages of 7 to 12 years old.

Music Club Workshop
Each child selects a percussion instrument that they would like to play. The children are then given an opportunity to explore their chosen instrument.
The creative environment the workshop provides very quickly awakens the children’s interest, and they are always surprised by the possibilities music opens up for them. Many children discover resources of creativity they were previously unaware they possessed.
After the children have built up their confidence by playing the instruments, they are given an opportunity to explore their imagination further by using torches, lights and silhouettes.

The Primary Goals
• To develop positive expectations from music
• To build a positive relationship both with the music therapist and other people
• To develop an ability to listen
• To relieve tension and anxiety
• To develop communication skills
• To develop self-awareness, motivation and confidence

Workshop for Children
The workshop consists of five modules that include exploration of the mind, the development of bodily expression and the use of musical instruments (e.g. percussion and keyboard). Each module will be covered by its own session lasting 45 minutes.
Module 1 Children have the opportunity to explore their creativity by playing percussion instruments and the piano.
Module 2 Children learn to develop bodily expression through dance.
Module 3 This module consists of interaction with lights of different colours designed to encourage creativity.
Module 4 Children are given the opportunity to improvise with the therapist by playing the piano in order to create their own music.
Module 5 Having completed Modules 1-4, the children are encouraged to use the knowledge gained throughout the course in order to put on a performance.

Workshop for Teachers
Does the piano lie neglected in your school because too few people know how to play it?
This workshop is designed for all those who have never had the time or the opportunity to learn to play the keyboard, but would like to incorporate it into their work with children. Music can be an invaluable tool in helping children to develop and explore their creativity, and you do not need to be a concert pianist before you can exploit its potential. In fact, you do not need to be able to play at all!
The workshop will offer training and advice on how to use the keyboard in games, dance and movement exercises, the exploration of rhythm and tempo.

Testimonials
"This is to thank you for your involvement with the music club over the past three years. The children have thoroughly enjoyed their weekly sessions with you. Their confidence has grown alongside the musical ability as demonstrated in their eagerness to participate in the excellent production directed by you, which the whole school has also thoroughly enjoyed.
We hope that many more children continue to gain from your invaluable experience in the future. We wish you luck with all that you do and once again thank you for all your time and commitment."
David Harris (Head Teacher, Marjorie Kinnon School, Isleworth)
