Our first ever Music Marathon which took place on 30th September 2018 at St Margaret’s Church Hall, St Margaret’s, was a brilliant success. It exceeded all our expectations with more than a hundred people taking part and over £7,600 raised! We had musicians of all ages (from 5 to over 90), abilities and genres performing on Sunday. Music of all styles was represented, spanning the ages from early music, classical and opera, right through to contemporary pop, with a smattering of nursery rhymes and familiar tunes to delight our audience of all ages. The hall was packed throughout and the atmosphere was electric from the start, when our patron Sir Vince Cable opened the event.
A big thank-you to all the performers who gave up their time to take part and raise sponsorship for us. Through the Music Marathon we are really excited to have connected with so many new people, bringing our students together with local musicians and with our community. Thank you to everyone who donated. For anyone who missed the opportunity and would like to help us raise even more you can access the fundraising page for two more weeks: mydonate.bt.com/okmtmusicmarathon
This will help us make a big difference to our OK Music School – it will enable us to work with more pupils with additional needs. We can teach more children and young adults to play music and perform, bringing them confidence, self-esteem and the chance to express themselves.
OK Music School is helping over 50 children and young people with additional needs to learn to play an instrument or sing and perform in public. Children who were previously excluded are now performing with joy and pride in front of audiences and are part of a community. Some have even passed music exams.
